Mind the Bump – why you MUST avoid overalls in pregnancy and other essential maternity clothes tips

mind-the-bump-why-you-must-avoid-overalls-in-pregnancy-and-other-essential-maternity-clothes-tips

THE STORY OF THE POST

_MG_3197-1

you need some maternity clothes. Seriously, a leaf is not going to cut it.

This is a long post with zero interest to anyone bar the newly pregnant. But I enjoy shopping, and embrace every new opportunity to shop, so my two pregnancies gave me a WHOLE new genre to investigate. The joy. So it’s long. But I figure if you’re first time pregnant you’ll be interested. And if you’re not, you won’t read any of it, so I can whittle on for pages without shame and if you’re really just interested in looking at things for yourself without my helpful hints (rude), skip to the bottom for a list of good maternity clothes stockists.

Top Tip which I give you after several years and a couple of dollars spent – bear this in mind: you won’t need true maternity clothes until at least four or five months in. Possibly later depending on whether you are one of those annoying people who wears their own jeans until about 8 months in. Possibly a bit earlier if you are onto your third child and carrying a 10lb heifer in your stomach.  Either way, although I fully appreciate the desire to embrace this whole new category, it is NOT for a whole nine month period, you do NOT need an entire new wardrobe.  That being said though, you wouldn’t want to ignore all the lovely possibilities out there…..  Read more...

Another Genius Gift Idea

another-genius-gift-idea

As hard as they are to come by I’m not one to keep a good find to myself, so I’ll let you in on my latest stroke of genius, made possible by Flying Start Toys on Etsy, some serious Etsy search-and-discover skills on my part in finding this little gem and a flash of creativity, again on my part, although, admittedly, as someone who is not actually very creative on a whole, this self-perceived creativeness may not seem quite as grand to the outside world.  But I can assure you the outcome is good. And… you may copy.

I came across Flying Start Toys’ Sail Away boats  – made from materials with beautiful patterns and in the following lovely combinations shown below – while searching for a mobile for a baby’s new nursery as a gift (in an effort to find an alternative to the OTT sound and light shows one finds in commercial baby stores).   I never found a mobile I liked, but was delighted to stumble across these.  Read more...

San Miguel Food Market Madrid

san-miguel-food-market-madrid

The San Miguel Market (Mercado de san Miguel) in Madrid is an exciting culinary and entertainment addition to the centre of Madrid, long overdue. Very overdue in fact. The building sat empty for over 10 years.  It has been beautifully renovated and the food displays are a pleasure to look at as well as feast on.  You can sip on champagne while sliding back freshly shucked oysters or grab a tray of tapas and a beer to enjoy under the high ceilings of the light and airy interior.

If you go on the weekend, try to arrive outside of 2:30 to 3:30 when it gets a little bit crazy – but if you arrive at peak hour, the insiders trick is to enter through the “back door”, the entrance farthest from plaza mayor where there is more space than the hordes realize.  We found a space even with pram in tow.

Wallpaper porn & other fabulous things Scandinavians are good at

"Feather" wallpaper from Scandanavian Design Center

"Feather" wallpaper from Scandanavian Design Center

I am loving Scandinavian design right now. I came across online store Huset shop recently – “your house for modern Scandinavian living”.  It has so much truly awesome stuff I don’t even know where to start.  So just go there.  I suggest you start small – with the kids section – and then go as far as your credit card will take you.

A few days before that discovery, I stumbled across this other piece of Scandinavian fabulousness (while reading some high brow fashion magazine that I can now no longer recall);  Scandinavian designed wallpaper from a company called Scandinavian Design Center.  I love the patterns.  They are works of art.  As far as I am qualified to identify what is art.  Which is not at all.  But take it from me, it’s a delight for the eyes.  Not even sore eyes.  Just eyes in general.    I could stare at the wallpaper and fabrics all day and, seeing as the article was only 5 pages long, I had to take my addiction to their web page where I was delighted to browse pages and pages of wallpaper and fabric designs which I stared at for many, many minutes and at least two cups of tea.  I should have been doing other things and not coveting that which I can not pay for or find a place  Read more...

Baby Deli Madrid

baby-deli-madrid

Madrid has a new(ish) and very cool destination for parents and children, the likes of which we’ll hopefully see more of before too long.  Baby Deli is the project of interior designer and Mum Tatiana Arelle and her three business partners, all young, successful Mums.  Among them is fashion designer Carolina Herrera.  The shop includes a food and toy range (of ecological and commercially-just products), cafe, and classes for babies, mums and infants.  Read more...
