Jacqui and Kate are two friends living far from home in the warming glow of their charming yet very un-Australian husbands. They are unsure about this whole mothering caper – some days Kate thinks she might be very good at it, other days she knows that two croissants and a glass of green cordial would not make the child nutrition guidelines. Jacqui is pretty sure she’ll be very good at it. As good as she is at ironing.
Kate, married to Captain Sensible*, lives in London and just had her third child. She used to spend her fee-earning hours working in professional services marketing and her slightly more productive but slightly more wearying hours hanging with her small son – a.k.a the Bear – by her side (when he’s not running off in the opposite direction towards the nearest packet of biscuits), the Mouse and the newest addition, the Ant. Kate is currently enjoying her 14th new house and 7th change of city/country in 10 years – possibly the world’s leading expert on connecting utilities. “If you’re tired of London, you’re tired of life” – sometimes she thinks she’s tired of life but gives London her fair dues for having a crack at making her feel better. Other times she has decided the country has gone to the dogs and she might start reading the Daily Mail. Currently annoyed at people who claim that pregnancy is a wonderful experience (is it the fat ankles, the nausea or the waddling that provides the greatest joy?) Kate did not suffer in silence through her third pregnancy. Kate’s greatest claim to fame is her superior spreadsheeting skills – if you need something to organise your life, she’s your woman.
Jacqui just grew a person for the second time (like that’s not a weird experience) while living in Madrid and working in online media. The lack of interaction in her mother tongue causes her to get way too excited about sharing her thoughts and doubts about pregnancy and motherhood with anyone who has the capacity to listen, while not necessarily the interest. Finding the pool a bit small she has turned to blogging. She grew up in Melbourne, after her family emigrated from South Africa. Before moving to Spain in 2007, she lived in Sydney, her favourite place on this earth. It was in Sydney that she passed many fabulous single years before meeting her Spanish husband, who swept her off her feet, tearing her away from singledom and her single friends (having to prise her off finger by finger) to bring her to Madrid. The Spaniard and his unerring support are getting her through the days of language battles and cultural misunderstanding and the frequent desire to be back in Sydney, sipping on NZ Riesling with her gorgeous girlfriends beachside.
* Kate’s husband was the first and is therefore THE official Cpt Sensible but both husbands are VERY sensible and are frequently referred to with this tag. Our Captain Sensibles provide a guiding and helpful support that is at the same time smug and irritating. Unfortunately they are often right. Although that is obviously a highly confidential admission that should never be referred to outside this page.
