Baby Deli Madrid
Madrid has a new(ish) and very cool destination for parents and children, the likes of which we’ll hopefully see more of before too long. Baby Deli is the project of interior designer and Mum Tatiana Arelle and her three business partners, all young, successful Mums. Among them is fashion designer Carolina Herrera. The shop includes a food and toy range (of ecological and commercially-just products), cafe, and classes for babies, mums and infants.

Not surprisingly, given Arell’s background, the interior design of the store is delightful – lots of light and white wood; like the nursery you’d have if you lived in a very, very large house in the country (and had horses – if only so you could walk around in jodhpurs and tall boots – and a golden retriever, and of course a pond and pergola, which, naturally you would maintain with the help of your parliamentary expenses).
The playroom used for classes is right next to the cafe so that parents can look on with great satisfaction at someone else suffering at the hands of their children while they take in breakfast, lunch or some pretty darn delicious cupcakes (I felt it was my obligation to investigate the quality of these cupcakes and I give them a big thumbs up. 10 points for the cupcakes and 10 points to me for thoroughness).
Classes include English for babies, physical expression through music, yoga, and cooking class for infants. There’s also an art class for Mums and baby and mum massage classes. And when Baby Deli are not giving classes, they also host children’s birthday parties.
The only bad thing I can point to is that the café service can be a little, well, Spanish, which probably can’t be helped given that the store is in fact in Spain. Otherwise it’s all pretty fabulous. It’s the kind of business that would do well in any neighbourhood with a good representation of young families. Think about it mummy entrepreneurs (mummypreneurs?).
An additional bonus of Madrid’s Baby Deli is that the very cool, business-savvy founders of this cafe apparently all bring their kids along to the classes with some frequency. Should you happen to make it to my side of the world, there’s rarely been a better opportunity to exploit your child for some shoulder rubbing with the designer set. You may have to quit stuffing the cup cakes down your face to affect the required level of sophistication. Which may not be worth it because, as I said, they’re pretty good cupcakes. Unless of course you can figure out a way to eat very large cupcakes and still look sophisticated. In which case, be sure to drop me a line and let me know about how to do that.

This is a great place! One of my favorites in Madrid. Not only for the food and the back yard with the tent for the kids, but also for the collection of very cool books (in english and spanish) and toys. They are also the only place in Madrid that sells the Born Free bpa-free baby bottles and other great bpa-free and organic products for babies and toddlers.
